National Gallery of Scotland

The National Gallery of Scotland is located on The Mound, a grassy man-made elevation between East Princes Street and West Princes Street in central Edinburgh. The building is designed in the neoclassical style and, along with the adjacent Royal Scottish Academy, is a masterpiece by 19th-century architect William Henry Playfair. The two structures stand side by side on the raised platform. The gallery opened to the public in 1859 and was reconstructed in 1912.

The National Gallery of Scotland consists of five exhibition venues in Edinburgh, along with two partner venues in the southern and northern parts of Scotland. Its art collection is world-class, with these five venues including: the Scottish National Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy Building, the National Gallery of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Dean Gallery. The Dean Gallery also houses the administrative offices and director’s office of the National Gallery of Scotland.

The National Gallery of Scotland is renowned for housing outstanding works of painting from various European countries. It features an exceptional collection of paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance to the 19th century, with highlights including two authentic works by Van Gogh. Other notable pieces are Paul Gauguin’s 1888 painting “Vision After the Sermon (Jacob Wrestling with the Angel),” Diego Velázquez’s “The Spinners,” and Titian’s 1559 work “Diana and Actaeon.”
