The Art "Olympics" Kick Off with Elite Performers Gathering in Edinburgh

This summer in the UK has been exceptionally vibrant, with this year’s Olympic Games drawing elite athletes from around the world to London. Meanwhile, every August marks the beginning of Edinburgh’s art extravaganza, where classic artworks take center stage across the city — from renowned orchestras and dance troupes performing in prestigious venues, to spontaneous self-expressive street acts, avant-garde performances that defy convention, as well as the majestic military tattoos in ancient castles, book fairs bringing writers together, and laid-back jazz sessions. Visitors to Edinburgh can enjoy a packed schedule of festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival (August 9 – September 2), the Edinburgh Art Festival (August 2 – September 2), the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (August 3 – August 25), the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (August 3 – August 27), and the Edinburgh International Book Festival (August 11 – August 27). Among these, the Edinburgh International Festival, much like France’s Avignon Festival, is one of the oldest and largest international arts festivals in the world. However, it distinguishes itself by featuring not only theater and dance, but also classical music, ballet, and opera. The number of participating performance groups continues to grow, ranging from annual heavyweights like the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Wagner Chorus, and opera companies from France and Germany, to artists from the US, China, Japan, Africa, and beyond, all showcasing their finest work.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe provides a golden opportunity for young, unknown, yet ambitious performers to make their breakthrough. In 1947, eight performance groups showed up uninvited, hoping to perform at the official International Festival. Unfortunately, they were not listed in the official program, and some could only find lodging in public theaters, striving for exposure under difficult circumstances. A journalist dubbed the event “Fringe,” and thus the Fringe Festival was born. There are no restrictions on performance standards, participants find their own venues, and manage their own profits and losses — these are the defining traits of the Fringe. It’s somewhat akin to New York’s Off-Broadway, and is also considered the “Off-Avignon Festival.”

One of the festival’s most popular events is the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, held at sunset within Edinburgh Castle. The performance has taken place since 1950, and one of the greatest gifts from the Queen was officially granting the event royal recognition by adding the word “Royal” to its title. Lasting about 1.5 hours, the Tattoo features thousands of spectators under the moonlight enjoying stirring military bands, rousing drum corps, lively marches, powerful Scottish bagpipes, or fast-paced Irish step dancing. Traditional music and attire, enhanced by cutting-edge stage lighting, create a spectacular scene against the romantic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle at night.
