Birthplace of Harry Potter!: A Must-Visit Café in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is indeed a beautiful city, and perhaps because Harry Potter was born here, it adds an extra layer of mystique.

There’s one café in this city that’s an absolute pilgrimage site—the Elephant House, known as the Birthplace of Harry Potter. Yes, the globally bestselling Harry Potter series was written right here. It’s easy to find The Elephant House following Google Maps. If it weren’t the birthplace of Harry Potter, I think it could easily be overlooked by most people.

But ever since J.K. Rowling wrote this globally beloved book, everything changed. Gone are the days of seeing a struggling writer sipping the cheapest coffee while writing here—now, it’s filled with tourists from all over the world, and of course, we were among them.

After waiting for a while, we finally got a seat. After ordering at the counter, the staff led us inside. It was quite lively in there—hard to imagine how anyone could find inspiration in such a noisy environment. We placed our drinks down on the table, each marked with a number tag, and waited for our food to arrive.

While waiting for a seat and placing our order, we noticed elephant-themed decor on the chairs and counters by the entrance. But now, the main attraction is undoubtedly the “Birthplace of Harry Potter” signage. From the posters at the door to the leaflets inside, everything emphasizes this as Harry Potter’s birthplace.

They also sell badges and postcards, including a blurry photo said to be of J.K. Rowling, reportedly taken here while she was writing Harry Potter. Back then, who would’ve thought a single novel would change her life so dramatically? Now, the café heavily markets itself as the “Birthplace of Harry Potter.”

Next to the restroom, there’s a photo on the wall of J.K. Rowling’s signing event after she became famous. Haha—this must be proof that the book was written here!! I wonder how she felt returning to the very spot where she once wrote.

Today, since we weren’t hungry, we only ordered a bowl of soup and the… cheapest coffee available. Haha—now that’s the true spirit of a pilgrimage, just like how J.K. Rowling once used this very coffee to fuel her creativity.

People don’t stay long here, and the crowd is constantly bustling with visitors from all over the world—lots of Japanese tourists, as well as young and elderly visitors. It’s clear how wide an age range Harry Potter appeals to—truly amazing!! Even if we can’t write a bestseller, we still came to snap a photo for the memories, hoping to soak up some inspiration and maybe write our own bestselling book someday.

Looking out the window of The Elephant House, you can see Edinburgh Castle, which inevitably brings to mind scenes from the books. Perhaps it was this very environment that sparked her imagination and enriched her work. Though I’m not a huge Harry Potter fan, I still wanted to visit and see the setting that inspired such incredible writing.

Before leaving, don’t miss the restroom—the signatures and doodles inside are truly entertaining. Everyone wants to leave their mark at the birthplace of Harry Potter.

Walking through the streets of Edinburgh, with its stone buildings and winding cobblestone paths, you can’t help but feel a sense of complexity and magic. It makes you wonder again—what is creativity? Perhaps it’s observation of daily life combined with imagination. This city surely gave J.K. Rowling plenty of inspiration. For all you Harry Potter fans out there, this is definitely a must-visit pilgrimage spot!!
