Forth Bridge

The Forth Bridge is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a cantilever bridge spanning the Firth of Forth, designed by John Fowler and Benjamin Baker. Their design employed cantilever steel beams to support two spans, each 46 meters long, using approximately 58,000 tons of steel in total.

To distinguish it from the Forth Road Bridge, the Forth Bridge is also known as the “Forth Railway Bridge.” It opened in 1890. The bridge is 2,528.7 meters long, with a main span of 519 meters. The railway track stands 47.8 meters above the water level. Due to strong winds, the bridge trusses are built with an inward incline. The tops of the towers are about 10 meters wide, while the bases are 36.6 meters wide. The bridge has three main towers, six cantilever arms each 206 meters long, and a suspended span of 107 meters. It is widely recognized as one of the milestones in the history of railway bridge construction. Located in a major population hub of Scotland, the bridge serves as a key transportation hub on the eastern side of the country, facilitating travel for locals and also serving as a template for the construction of other bridges. Many subsequent bridges adopted similar designs.
