Hopetoun House

Hopetoun House is one of Scotland’s most outstanding stately homes, located 12 miles west of Edinburgh near South Queensferry. It is a masterpiece and heritage of European architecture, originally built as the residence of the British nobleman, the Marquess of Linlithgow. The house sits on the banks of the Firth of Forth, in the center of a beautiful 100-acre park, where you can see the Forth Bridge, the world’s first famous steel bridge, located about 1.5 miles to the east.

Hopetoun House is divided into two parts: the older section was designed by Sir William Bruce and built between 1699 and 1702, primarily featuring a magnificent staircase; the newer section was designed by William Adam and his sons Robert and John between 1721 and 1748, during which the building was significantly expanded, with its interior decoration mainly completed by Robert and John; the grand entrance hall was originally constructed in 1752. The interiors of Hopetoun House are lavishly decorated and renowned for their art collection, which includes works by Gainsborough, Ramsay, and Raeburn.

Each summer, Hopetoun House is open to visitors and occasionally hosts classical music recitals. The famous Chilean pianist Alfredo Perl once performed a Chopin recital here. In addition, the house is also available for rent for weddings, conferences, or film shoots.
