The National Museum of Scotland was established in 2006 through the merger of the former Museum of Scotland and the Royal Museum of Scotland. As a result, the museum’s collections are housed in two separate buildings—one a modern structure and the other a Victorian-era building.

The design of the museum’s modern building is closely integrated with Scotland’s distinctive history and natural environment, particularly echoing the round tower of Edinburgh Castle to create a seamless blend of history and modernity. Its exterior features Scottish golden sandstone, giving it the weathered appearance of an ancient structure. The triangular entrance hall rises seven stories high, creating a dynamic sense of space that has been aptly likened to a “birdcage.”

The Museum of Scotland primarily showcases the history and culture of Scotland, with a vast collection of related artifacts. A series of exhibition rooms are arranged chronologically from the bottom up, guiding visitors through Scotland’s journey from its origins to the 20th century. Major themes include early humans, the Kingdom of Scotland, the Industrial Age, Scotland in Transition, and Scottish Sports. In addition to exhibits, the museum includes many interactive elements and offers a variety of historical costumes for visitors to wear for photos, adding an enjoyable dimension to the visit.

The Royal Museum of Scotland is a Victorian-style building connected to the Museum of Scotland via an internal passageway. The museum houses an impressive collection of decorative arts, as well as materials related to industrial technology, archaeology, and natural science. It features 36 exhibition rooms displaying natural specimens and other artifacts from around the world.
