Introduction Located on the west side of the southern bank of the Liffey River in downtown Dublin, St. Patrick’s Cathedral (St. Patrick's Cathedral) stands at the oldest Christian site in the city. It is said that St. Patrick was baptized and converted to Christianity at an ancient well here. The earliest St. Patrick’s Cathedral was built in 450 AD, and after several renovations, it has reached its current scale. In 1181 AD, King Henry II of England appointed John Comyn as the Archbishop of Dublin, after which construction of St. Patrick’s Cathedral began and continued until the late 14th century. The present-day cathedral was renovated in the 19th century. The bell tower on the west side was added during the 1370 renovation and still houses the largest bell in all of Ireland. Within this church, there are not only early Celtic tombstones but also the graves of important figures in Irish history, including the first President of the Irish Republic. The significance of St. Patrick’s Cathedral is comparable to that of Westminster Abbey in the UK. Transportation Address: Saint Patrick's Close, Dublin 8, Dublin. Opening hours: Daily from 9 am to 6 pm, except Saturdays, and from 9 am to 3 pm from November to February. The cathedral is closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, St. Stephen’s Day, and New Year’s Day.
