Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle was built on a bend of the River Nore, and this Norman-era structure has weathered centuries of history. Constructed in 1172 by Strongbow, it was later destroyed by King Donald O'Brien of Thomond. Between 1195 and 1213, William Marshall, Strongbow’s son-in-law and successor, rebuilt it, switching the main construction material to stone and brick.

Known as the “Castle of Iron and Stone,” Kilkenny Castle is an irregular quadrangle fortified with numerous drum towers. Most of the building remains intact despite undergoing multiple reconstructions over time. The castle changed hands among various owners throughout its history before finally coming under state care in 1967.

As a castle that has passed through many hands, it has witnessed countless changes in the world of men.
