Achill Island

Achill Island is located in the west of the Republic of Ireland, within County Mayo, covering an area of 148 square kilometers. The island is mountainous and its economy mainly revolves around agriculture, fishing, and tourism. It is connected to mainland Ireland by a bridge over the Achill Sound.

The highest points on Achill Island are the quartzite peaks of Slieve Croaghaun and Slieve More. The island is covered with wild boglands and boasts stunning coastal scenery. In the south of the island, Kildavnet features the ruins of a 12th-century church and a 15th-century castle. On clear days, the island looks like a colorful paradise — with its emerald-green mountains and azure skies, and seas as blue as those of Naples. But when the weather turns foul, the Atlantic roars all around, and the east winds howl down from the hills like flocks of demons.

The locals’ white cottages are clustered picturesquely along the cliffs that jut out toward the sea. They love dancing and music, and the sound of their fiddles is as sweet as birdsong. They are especially warm and welcoming to visitors.
