The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark

The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark is located in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, UK. A vast cave system has developed within the lower parts of the limestone slopes of the Cuilcagh Mountains, among which the Marble Arch Caves are among the most renowned caves in Britain and Ireland. These caves were first discovered in 1895 by the famous French speleologist Édouard Martel, who was a professor of speleology at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1985, the local administration of County Fermanagh developed the area as a tourist attraction. It has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Britain and Ireland, having welcomed tens of millions of visitors from over 100 countries.

The Marble Arch Caves are widely regarded as one of the world’s few caves of exceptional visual appeal, and are praised as a world-class tourist destination. In the Main River Cave, visitors can see a fast-flowing river along with precious, typical sedimentary formations and a variety of stunning stalactites. In recent years, the Marble Arch Caves have drawn international attention for their achievements in conservation and development, education, and geotourism. In 2001, the Marble Arch Caves and the Cuilcagh Mountain Park became the first European Geopark in the UK. In February 2004, the Marble Arch Caves were included in the Global Geoparks Network.
