Residence of the President of Ireland

The Residence of the President of Ireland is located in Phoenix Park in northern Dublin and serves as the official residence of the President of Ireland. It was designed and built by the park ranger Nathaniel Clements in the mid-18th century and was expanded in 1911.

Ireland's first president, Douglas Hyde, began residing on the ground floor of the building in 1938. He had originally intended to demolish the structure and rebuild a completely new presidential residence on the site. However, the outbreak of World War II put this plan on hold, sparing the house from demolition. Although the Residence of the President of Ireland is far less opulent than the palaces of other European royal families and some parts are somewhat worn, ongoing restoration work has been carried out. Nevertheless, it has been highly praised by every Irish president and holds a deep place in their affections.

The presidential residence includes only a drawing room, formal and informal dining rooms, the president’s office and library, a ballroom, a gallery displaying portraits of former presidents, and some 18th- and 19th-century bedrooms on the upper floor. Yet, it is a very comfortable place to live.
