O'Connell Street

O'Connell Street is one of the most important and bustling streets in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. Running north-south through the city center, it was established in the 18th century. The street is 500 meters long, 49 meters wide at the southern end and 46 meters wide at the northern end.

Before 1924, this street was named Sackville Street, and it was renamed to its current name in honor of the early 19th-century nationalist leader Daniel O'Connell. O'Connell Street is lined with many beautiful buildings and is one of the most spectacular commercial streets in Dublin. It was largely rebuilt in the early 20th century due to extensive damage during Ireland’s struggle for independence and the subsequent civil war. The street is also home to numerous monuments and statues of Ireland’s political leaders. The latest piece of public art is the 120-meter-tall spire made of needle-like stainless steel, known as the Spire of Dublin, which was erected in 2003 and has become a new iconic landmark of the city, attracting much attention.

O'Connell Street has often been at the center stage of Irish history, serving as the backdrop for events such as the 1916 Easter Rising, the 1922 Irish Civil War, the 1966 destruction of the Nelson's Pillar, and numerous public celebrations, protests, and demonstrations. The current O'Connell Street is also the main route for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
