Mountjoy Square

Mountjoy Square is located on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin, Ireland, and is one of the five Georgian squares in the city. The square was planned and developed in the late 18th century by Viscount Mountjoy. Construction began in the 1790s and was completed in 1818. It is surrounded by terraced Georgian red-brick houses.

Mountjoy Square is the only true Georgian square in Dublin. Each side is 140 meters long, with 18 houses on the north, east, and west sides, and 19 on the west. Although some of the original buildings were abandoned and eventually demolished in the 20th century, the facades of the new houses maintained a cohesive appearance. Over the centuries, the square has been home to many lawyers, clergy, politicians, writers, and visual artists, such as writer James Joyce, playwright Seán O'Casey, W.B. Yeats and his friend John O'Leary. The 2007 Oscar-winning film *Once* was filmed here.
