Galway City Museum

Established in 2006, Galway City Museum was created to collect, preserve, and exhibit heritage related to the history of Galway city, enabling both locals and visitors to better understand the city’s past and present, and to preserve its most valuable historical legacy for future generations.

The museum is situated in a very modern building located in the heart of Galway city, on the banks of the River Corrib, overlooking the Spanish Arch. Currently, the museum houses a collection of over 1,000 items, most of which have been donated by citizens over the past 30 years. The collection spans Galway’s archaeology, history, art, and industry. The permanent exhibitions are spread across three floors: the ground floor includes prehistoric Galway, medieval Galway, portraits, and sculptures; the first floor features film and audio exhibits, Galway’s film industry, and Galway’s art; the second floor focuses on Galway and the wars of the empire. Through these exhibitions, visitors can explore Galway’s history from ancient times to the present and learn about significant events that took place in the city.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, Galway City Museum also hosts regular temporary exhibitions, showcasing works by Irish artists or exploring the relationship between Galway’s art and industry, among other themes.
