Swiss Cottage is located on the southern edge of Cahir in South Tipperary, nestled along the River Suir. Built around 1810, it is a classic example of a "cottage ornée," a popular architectural style in the 19th century. In the UK, such buildings are referred to as "chocolate boxes," elaborate yet impractical.

Designed by the renowned architect John Nash, Swiss Cottage draws inspiration from nature. Its distinctive features include a curved thatched roof and ornate wooden structures. The interior layout and decor evoke the image of branching tree limbs. Originally serving as a cottage for receiving guests among the local gentry, it was restored in 1985 and opened to the public in 1989. Inside, you’ll find an elegant spiral staircase and lavishly decorated rooms. The living room’s wallpaper is among the earliest Parisian designs produced by the Dufour factory, featuring natural themes, while the furnishings also reflect strong elements of nature.

Swiss Cottage has become one of the most photogenic and picturesque cottages in Ireland, attracting many visitors who come to admire this uniquely charming structure and take photos with it.
