Killarney National Park is located in the town of Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. Established in 1932, it covers an area of 102 square kilometers, making it Ireland’s first national park. It is the only habitat in Ireland for herds of native red deer and also the national park with the largest expanse of natural forest in the country.

Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981, Killarney National Park is home to many rare and precious species of flora and fauna. Numerous native mammals can be found within the park, including the wood mouse, which was discovered here in 1964, and the pine marten, another rare animal. The only wild herd of native red deer in Ireland lives on the highlands within the park, numbering over 700 individuals. These deer have lived in Ireland for more than 4,000 years, making them extremely precious. The park has been classified as a special protected area due to the diverse range of bird species inhabiting it—141 species have been recorded, including montane birds, woodland birds, and wintering waterfowl. It offers an impressive array of avian life and is one of the best birdwatching spots in Ireland.

In addition to animals and birds, visitors to Killarney National Park can also admire cascading waterfalls, murmuring streams, tranquil lakes, and Muckross House—the most luxurious villa in Ireland—along with the gardens surrounding it.
