Shannon Cave

Shannon Cave is located in County Cavan, Ireland, with a vertical depth of 130 meters, making it the deepest cave in Ireland. The cave stretches 5.4 kilometers in length, ranking as the sixth longest cave in the country. It is still being explored, and it is believed that its length will continue to grow as exploration progresses.

Discovered in 1980, Shannon Cave features a gently flowing underground river approximately 150 meters in length. The water in the river originates from Shannon Pot, which is also one of the sources of the River Shannon. To date, the cave has formed numerous stalactites of varying sizes and thicknesses, all of which have taken millions of years to develop. Stalactites, the earliest stage in the formation of stalagmites and stalactites, grow downward from the cave ceiling, maintaining a roughly consistent diameter and taking the form of hollow, slender glass-like tubes. Due to the pristine, unpolluted environment within the cave, these stalactites boast a jade-like white color and a smooth, creamy texture. It is said that these stalactites, similar to straws, are hollow in the middle and—if conditions allowed—could potentially be used as such. However, these extremely precious formations are for observation only.
