Knock Shrine

Knock Shrine is located in the small village of Knock in County Mayo, Ireland. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Irish Catholics and also a national sanctuary of Ireland. It is said to be the site where the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John the Evangelist, Jesus, and St. Joseph appeared.

One evening in 1879, people ranging in age from 5-year-old children to 75-year-old elders witnessed the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist at a small local chapel. According to eyewitness accounts, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared exceptionally beautiful, dressed in a white robe and wearing a crown, radiantly lovely, with her eyes lifted toward the sky and her hands slightly raised. Sculptures based on the appearances of these figures were later created to allow pilgrims to venerate them. The shrine is entirely white, with white statues placed inside, creating a solemn and sacred atmosphere.

Today, Knock Shrine has become one of the world’s most renowned Marian shrines, attracting pilgrims and visitors from around the globe, with approximately 1.5 million visitors each year who come hoping to witness an apparition of the Virgin Mary.
