Céide Fields is located on the north coast of County Mayo in Ireland and is a world-renowned archaeological site. It is the oldest known field system in the world, with a history of over 5,500 years, and represents an exceptionally important and unique Neolithic landscape.

Céide Fields was first discovered in the 1930s. In order to preserve the integrity of the archaeological site, archaeologists initially conducted their research using the simplest methods. This vast field offers a true glimpse into the lives of early settlers. Based on the remains of settlements and burial sites, we can infer how people lived over 200 generations ago. The Neolithic landscape of Céide Fields holds great global significance, with remnants such as stone walls, houses, and megalithic tombs having withstood thousands of years of weathering. These features are now preserved within peat layers, bearing witness to the lives of early settlers and telling the stories of daily life that once unfolded here.

At the Céide Fields Visitor Centre, visitors can explore the fascinating story of the site’s more than 5,500-year history through richly informative exhibitions. Learn about the struggle of the people who lived here with nature, as well as the diverse local flora.
