Carrowmore Neolithic Tomb Complex
The Carrowmore Neolithic Tomb Complex is located at a prehistoric historical site in County Sligo, Ireland. It is one of Ireland’s four great megalithic tomb sites and the largest of its kind in the country, with monuments dating back 5,500 to 6,500 years.
The Carrowmore Neolithic Tomb Complex is the largest and oldest neolithic tomb site in Ireland, consisting of over 30 visible passage tombs. Many of the tombs are passage grave cemeteries made up of 30 to 40 stones, typically composed of gneiss. There are also satellite tombs that form part of the overall site, with the central highest area featuring a prominent monument. Currently, there are 27 protected monuments within the site, varying in condition. Research suggests there may have been around 100 monuments originally, many of which were destroyed by land-clearing farmers in the early 19th century.
