Ha'penny Bridge

Ha'penny Bridge is a famous landmark in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, spanning the River Liffey which divides the city into northern and southern sections. Originally named the Wellington Bridge, it was built to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon’s army at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, making it one of the oldest bridges in Dublin.

The official name of the bridge is the Liffey Bridge, but it is commonly referred to as the Ha'penny Bridge because, in the past, pedestrians had to pay a half-penny toll to cross it. Built in 1816, the footbridge is 43 meters long and provided a convenient crossing for people on both sides of the River Liffey. In 2001, around 27,000 people crossed the bridge daily, prompting the need for restoration. The renovation was carried out in 2001 and completed by the end of the year, restoring the bridge to its original white color.

This elegant white bridge has become a popular spot for couples to attach love locks. A large number of padlocks were hung on the structure, however, they began to damage the protected architectural features of the bridge. In 2012, in order to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge, the Dublin City Council had to remove some of the love locks.
