Black Abbey is located in Kilkenny City, County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is a Catholic abbey of the Dominican Order, dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. The Dominicans are known for wearing black cloaks and robes, hence the name "Black Abbey."

Black Abbey stands just outside the ancient walls of Kilkenny, where Dominican friars in their black habits once lived in religious seclusion. Originally built in 1225, it was the first Dominican abbey established in Ireland. Most of the existing structures date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The abbey has a long and fascinating history, having witnessed multiple reversals of fortune under various governments. Like many Dominican abbeys in Ireland, its church features a dark gray exterior and houses a nave and choir inside. Behind the altar lies a large stained-glass window known as the “Rose Window,” composed of five vertical panels. It is the largest stained-glass window in Ireland and one of the abbey’s architectural highlights—well worth a closer look.
