St. Anne's Church

St. Anne's Church is located in Shandon, Cork City, County Cork, Ireland, atop a local hill overlooking the gently flowing River Lee. The church was originally built in 1722, and its most distinctive feature is the tall, square bell tower, making it one of the iconic landmarks of Cork City.

The tall, square bell tower is quaint and elegant, constructed from grey limestone sandstone. The tower is divided into three sections, growing narrower toward the top. The middle section houses a clock, while the upper part contains the belfry, home to the famous eight-tone bell known as the "Peal of Bells," crafted by Abel in 1750. The church gained widespread recognition thanks to the famous ballad “The Bells of Shandon” written by Francis Sylvester Mahony, and thus St. Anne’s Church is famed for its renowned eight-tone bell. The largest of the bells weighs over 1.5 tonnes, and to reduce vibration, they are all mounted in fixed positions. The first bell was installed on December 7, 1752, and has been recast in 1865 and 1906. Nowadays, visitors can climb up to the belfry and ring the bells themselves.

The square bell tower stands 36.5 metres high, offering panoramic views of the entire city. At its top is a gilded, salmon-shaped weathervane, which is one of the most familiar city symbols for local residents.
