Since 1979, Crawford Art Gallery has been situated in the heart of Cork city. The building housing the gallery was constructed in 1724 and originally served as the Custom House, later becoming the Cork School of Art. The structure underwent significant expansion in 2000 and now stands as a striking example of Georgian-style architecture with modern elegance. The gallery’s permanent collection features European and Irish artworks, along with a range of classical Greek pieces, Roman sculptures by Antonio Canova, and precious artworks brought to Cork from the Vatican in 1818 — each exhibit unique and steeped in its own story. The gallery also hosts temporary and touring exhibitions, as well as art education and outreach programs.
