This is no ordinary market—it boasts a history of over two hundred years. The quaint UK Market even attracted a visit from the British Queen in May 2011.

However, the British Queen wasn't drawn here by the market sharing her country’s name. It is said that she became interested after reading in a book that this market had supplied provisions to British troops during the Napoleonic Wars. The name "UK Market" was given because its founders were Protestants, distinguishing it at the time from the "Irish Market" established by Catholics.

The UK Market dates back to 1788 and enjoys a reputation as one of the best fresh produce markets in Britain and Ireland. The beef comes from fertile pastures, where the cattle graze on natural grass and breathe the fresh mountain air; the seafood is sourced from the nearby town of Castletownbere, situated on the Beara Peninsula at the southwestern tip of County Cork, which is said to have some of the cleanest and purest seawater in the world; while wild salmon is caught in the River Lee, which flows through central County Cork.

The UK Market is spotlessly clean and well-organized, offering a wide array of goods—from meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables to spices and other ingredients. There are even small cafés and traditional restaurants. What was once a small agricultural and goods market with traces of ethnic oppression has now fully transformed into a showcase of “Made in Ireland.” Locals greet each other in the market, weaving between stalls of fruits, meats, and seasonings—that’s the daily life of Cork people.
