Eyre Square

Eyre Square, also known as John F. Kennedy Memorial Garden, is a public activity park located in the city center of Galway, County Galway, Ireland. Situated in the heart of the city and adjacent to the nearby Williams Street and Shop Street shopping areas, it serves as a great resting spot for shoppers.

Established in 1710 during the tenure of Galway’s then-mayor Edward Eyre, the square was named after him. In 1965, it was renamed John F. Kennedy Memorial Garden in honor of the U.S. President, who had visited Galway in 1963 before his assassination.

This rectangular park is surrounded by three major traffic arteries that form the core of Galway’s city center, with its western side being converted into a pedestrian zone in 2006. It is an open green garden accessible to all citizens, where visitors can take leisurely strolls and view various notable historic landmarks. You can see two large cast-iron cannons used in the Crimean War, a bust of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and the Browne Doorway among other sights.
