Lough Gur

Lough Gur is located in County Limerick, Ireland, forming a horseshoe shape at the foot of Knockadoon Hill. Unlike many lakes known for their scenic beauty and abundant aquatic life, this lake is famous for its archaeological sites. It is one of Ireland’s most important archaeological locations, with traces of human activity dating back to around 3000 BC near the lakeshore, as well as numerous megalithic remains.

Thanks to Lough Gur and the surrounding limestone hills, this prehistoric mystery and serenity have been preserved. Here you can find a wedge tomb from around 2000 BC, an 8th-century stone fort, an early Christian oval stone fort, a Neolithic cemetery, a standing stone circle and passage tomb from around 1500 BC, a ring fort and ditch, a magnificent stone circle from 2000 BC, and two medieval castles, among other historic sites.

There is a visitor center, parking lot, and picnic area by Lough Gur, making it a great spot for a day trip, especially in the summer. Visitors can engage in various water sports on the lake, but motorized watercraft such as speedboats are prohibited.
