Ross Castle is located within Killarney National Park in County Kerry, Ireland, situated on the shores of Lough Leane and overlooking the entire lake area, resembling a solitary giant.

Ross Castle was built in the late 15th century by the O'Donoghue Ross family, a ruling local clan known for their prominence in Killarney. However, in 1580, ownership of the castle transferred to the Desmond rebels. The castle’s long period of solitude also carries its own helplessness and sorrow, as it witnessed one of the largest invasions in Irish history — the complete subjugation of Ireland by the British. As a fortress guarding Killarney and even County Kerry at that time, Ross Castle held undeniable strategic importance. Yet, faced with the British army’s advanced firearms and well-trained troops, resistance forces across the southern counties fell one after another. After months of siege, Ross Castle was eventually captured. Thereafter, it came under the control of an English Duke, Ludlow, transforming from a stronghold defending its homeland into a garrison used to suppress local villagers. British troops were stationed here, and the castle was modified with the addition of a barracks.

This weather-beaten castle, having witnessed countless scenes of bloodshed and conflict, gradually leaned and fell into ruin, and by 1850 had been completely abandoned. After Ireland regained independence in 1921, a group of American businessmen (of Irish descent) returned to their ancestral home and funded the restoration of the castle. Ross Castle stands as a symbol of Ireland’s indomitable spirit and a testament to those centuries of suffering.
