Eskta

Eskta is located in County Kerry, Ireland. It is a solid stone tower standing atop Carhoo Hill, overlooking the bustling Dingle Harbour.

Built in 1847, Eskta's main purpose was to guide ships into the safe harbour; a wooden signal mast was installed at the top of the tower to direct boats to their destination. It has been dubbed a 19th-century mariner’s beacon and a World War II lookout. This is because the entrance to Dingle Harbour is a blind entrance, and Eskta signalled to sailors to slow down and enter the harbour smoothly. It is a solid stone tower situated on Carhoo Hill, 600 feet above sea level, and began operation during the Irish Famine. The tower was originally 27 feet tall, but at the turn of the century, the original signal mast was removed, an additional 13 feet were added to the existing height, and a new signal mast was subsequently reinstalled.

Standing atop Carhoo Hill where Eskta is located, you can overlook nearly the entire Dingle Peninsula, as well as the surrounding islands and Ireland’s two highest mountain ranges.
