Monasterboice

Monasterboice is located in County Louth, Ireland, and is a historic site of an early monastic settlement. The monastery was established in the late 5th century, largely developed by Saint Buithe, who passed away around 521 AD. It remained an important religious and learning center until the nearby Mellifont Abbey was built in 1142.

Monasterboice Monastery was destroyed by fire in 1097. The surviving ruins include two 14th-century churches and an early round tower, but the site is most famous for its 10th-century high cross, believed to be the tallest in Ireland. The round tower stands approximately 35 meters tall and is remarkably well-preserved, though entry into the tower is not permitted.

The 5.5-meter-tall Muiredach’s High Cross is widely regarded as the best-preserved high cross in Ireland. It is named after the abbot who died in 923 AD, and features carvings from both the Old and New Testaments. In addition, the North and West Crosses are also relatively well-preserved examples of such crosses, though they have suffered significant weathering damage.
