Donegal Castle

Donegal Castle is located in the town of Donegal in County Donegal, Ireland, situated in the northwest of the country. For two centuries, most of the castle’s buildings lay in ruins, but in the 1990s, the castle underwent comprehensive restoration.

The castle was the stronghold of the O’Donnell clan, one of the most powerful Gaelic families in Ireland from the 5th to the 16th century. Built in 1474, it is recognized as one of Ireland’s finest Gaelic castles. During the “Flight of the Earls” in 1607, the O’Donnells left Ireland and, before departing, severely damaged the castle to prevent its use by others. In 1611, the castle and its lands were granted to the English captain Basil Brooke, who restored the castle. The Brooke family then lived there until the 18th century. In 1898, the last owner of Donegal Castle donated it to the government.

The government undertook a full restoration of Donegal Castle, preserving the original 15th- to 17th-century architectural style and techniques while adding new roofs and floors to the main tower. The castle features a rectangular tower house with late-Jacobean-style wings. It is situated on a bend of the River Eske, near the delta of Donegal Bay, and is surrounded by 17th-century walls. Today, the castle is open to visitors and often hosts Gaelic cultural events.
