Horn Head

Horn Head, meaning "hollow in the mountain" in Irish, is located on a peninsula in County Donegal in northwestern Ireland. In addition to its stunning natural coastal scenery, Horn Head also features numerous Neolithic stone circles, ancient tombs, and prehistoric stone walls.

The cliffs of Horn Head rise to a height of 180 meters and serve as an internationally significant breeding ground for seabirds, primarily including European shags and puffins. It is designated as a Natural Heritage Area and a wildlife refuge in Ireland, particularly for seabirds. The Horn Head cliffs are also recognized as a Special Area of Conservation by the Irish government. On the western side of the peninsula where Horn Head is situated, there is an erosion feature called “McSwyne’s Gun.” During storms, seawater can surge into the cave to a height of 200 to 300 feet, and the roaring sound of the sea can be heard from as far as ten miles away, making it a rare natural spectacle.

Two watchtower ruins stand atop Horn Head—one dating back to the Napoleonic era and the other from the Second World War. From either tower, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and Tory Island. The headland faces east, so the facing islands and coastline are backlit in the morning, but the sunset in the evening is even more spectacular.
