Aillwee Cave

Aillwee Cave is located in the Burren region of County Clare, Ireland, and is a famous ancient cave wonder situated beneath karst terrain with a history spanning over a thousand years. The name "Aillwee" means "yellow cliff."

The entrance to Aillwee Cave is cleverly tucked into the mountainside, with an opening shaped like a keyhole. To access this mysterious cave, visitors must first walk through a one-kilometer-long underground tunnel. Inside the cave, there is an underground river, a waterfall, as well as massive stalactites and stalagmites. As you venture further along the tunnel, the path becomes increasingly rugged and slippery, while the cave scenery grows even more astonishing. The sound of slender waterfalls echoes through the caverns, and colorful stalactites and stalagmites are found throughout, having formed over at least eight thousand years.

Aillwee Cave is well-known among the Irish not only for its breathtaking wonders but also for the incredible animal culture embedded within: a thousand years ago, the island of Ireland was ruled by brown bears. A large number of bear bones and fossils have been discovered in the cave. Research suggests that this may have been the last habitat of European brown bears in Ireland, which is why the cave is also known as the "Bear Cave."

The entrance and the rest hall of Aillwee Cave are entirely built from colorful stones, blending seamlessly with the surrounding stone mountains. Inside the rest hall's stone cave stands a giant brown bear model, seemingly declaring to visitors: this was once its domain.
