Boyle Abbey

Boyle Abbey is located in the town of Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland. It is an impressive and well-preserved ruin of a Cistercian monastery, founded by Cistercian monks in 1161. Today, the abbey ruins have been listed as part of Ireland's National Heritage and are undergoing some restoration work, attracting numerous domestic and international visitors all year round.

Boyle Abbey is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Ireland. Prior to its establishment, the monks made three unsuccessful attempts to found a Cistercian monastery in the province of Connacht, a historic region of Ireland. The abbey was completed in 1120 and follows a layout typical of many Cistercian monasteries — a church is situated on the north side of the rectangular cloister, while surrounding structures include the chapter house, kitchen, storerooms, and dormitories.

Today, only a small portion of Boyle Abbey remains, as it was converted into a military garrison during the Elizabethan era in 1592. In 1645, the abbey suffered damage when it was besieged by Confederate forces. Despite its destruction, Boyle Abbey remains an impressive architectural forerunner among early Cistercian monasteries in Ireland. Nowadays, exhibitions on Irish history are displayed within the restored 16th- and 17th-century gatehouse.
