Leap Castle

Leap Castle is located in County Clare, Ireland. Built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara, it is a magnificent example of medieval tower house architecture.

Leap Castle has a long and eventful history. It began as a battleground and later evolved into a residence. In 1571, it became the home of the MacNamara family. Donagh MacNamara was one of the leaders of the 1641 rebellion. The castle remained in the MacNamara family until 1659 when it was confiscated by the government. It was then granted to the Roundhead, Ausley Smith. However, after the restoration of the monarchy in 1670, it was returned to the MacNamara family. The MacNamaras sold the castle to the Scott family in 1800, who undertook extensive renovations and expansions. In 1855, Darby O'Brien acquired the castle and continued its restoration.

In the 1920s, Leap Castle passed into the hands of a local farmer and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, in 1966, a well-known American couple of architects purchased the castle. In collaboration with the Shannon Development Centre, they carried out an extensive, meticulous, and careful restoration, returning the castle to its former 15th-century glory while preserving some of the later additions that stand as a testament to the castle’s long and varied past. Additionally, the 1.76-acre garden surrounding the castle was also restored to its former splendor, with tall and majestic garden walls adorned with beautiful climbing roses.
