Established in 1893, Lahinch Golf Club, built along the contours of the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the world’s finest links courses and is often hailed as Ireland’s “St Andrews.” The Old Course takes advantage of the natural terrain to form numerous exceptional golf holes, featuring its greens, towering sand dunes, tight fairways, and the breathtaking beauty of the Atlantic Ocean, presenting an unprecedented challenge even for top-tier golfers. Each year, Lahinch Golf Club hosts the South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship.

Lahinch Golf Club boasts unparalleled originality. Scottish soldiers stationed in Limerick discovered this expansive stretch of dune land by the sea in the town of Lahinch and decided to build a golf course. The initial design simply wound around the dunes, but in 1894, Old Tom Morris redesigned the course. Morris regarded this links land as one of the finest natural settings for a golf course. Later, professional golfer George Gibson added several additional seaside holes. However, the most significant phase of development came in 1927 when Alister MacKenzie moved all 18 holes closer to the sea onto the dunes, introduced several new greens, extended the fairway lengths, and ultimately created the course as it stands today.

Lahinch is to Irish golf what North Berwick is to Scottish golf. Though not the birthplace of the sport, it is the perfect embodiment of this great game. For enthusiasts of links-style courses, it is nothing short of a pilgrimage site. Perhaps it isn’t the best course in the world, but for those who aren’t moved by Lahinch, they might as well stop searching for greatness—there are few courses in the sport that surpass it.
