Leap Castle is located in County Offaly, Ireland, about 4 miles north of the town of Roscrea. As for when the castle was built, opinions vary — ranging from the 13th century to the late 15th century — but it most likely dates back to around the year 1250, constructed by the most powerful local family, the O'Carrolls.

Leap Castle is famous for being considered the most haunted castle in Ireland. Over 400 years ago, in 1532, a deadly feud between two brothers led to bloodshed. The elder brother, a warrior, stormed into the chapel with a sword drawn and stabbed his younger brother, who was a priest. The priest fell dead at the altar. Since then, the chapel has been called the Bloody Chapel. The dungeon of the castle is known as the "Hell Hole," where prisoners were dropped through the floor and impaled on iron spikes eight feet below. The ghost said to haunt Leap Castle is a black demon the size of a goat, with a human face, black eyes, and an overpowering stench of rotting flesh. It's an ideal place for ghost hunting — if you believe in such supernatural phenomena.
