Kilbannon Monastery

Kilbannon Monastery is located in County Galway, Ireland, about 5 kilometers from the town of Gort. It is named after St. Kilbannon, the bishop who was born here. In the 7th century, St. Coman, the son of Dá Bharr, founded the monastery on land granted by his cousin, who was a king at the time.

Today, it is an important site of monastic ruins, featuring remnants of monastery buildings. Among them is a well-known round tower — not only one of the most characteristically Irish round towers, but also leaning by over half a meter. The tower stands over 30 meters tall, with its only entrance located about 7 meters above the ground. The surrounding area is dotted with gravestones of many historically significant local figures. Kilbannon Monastery was one of the most important diocesan centers in the 12th century and now belongs to the Diocese of Galway. Its prominence and importance in the 13th century led to several instances of plundering, resulting in the current state of the monastic ruins.
