Lough Derg

Lough Derg is the second largest lake in Ireland and the third largest on the entire island of Ireland. It is an elongated lake, with its southwestern part located in County Clare, its northwestern part in County Galway, and its eastern part in North Tipperary. This lake is one of the three largest lakes along the River Shannon, and its surroundings are dotted with many towns and villages.

The deepest point of Lough Derg reaches 36 meters, and it covers an area of 118 square kilometers. The lake features numerous small islands in its center and boasts magnificent water scenery, making it an ideal spot for outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and sailing. Near the downstream area where Lough Derg flows into the River Shannon, there is a spectacular waterfall. Since 1927, the massive Ardnacrusha hydroelectric power station has been built nearby. In the 19th century, Lough Derg was the main shipping route from the port of Limerick to Dublin. The navigable distance spanned 40 kilometers, and today it is a popular destination for cruisers and other recreational vessels, including opportunities for fishing and sailing.

The University of Limerick has an activity center on Lough Derg, offering facilities for canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, and other recreational activities. Since 2012, a pair of white-tailed sea eagles, reintroduced through a breeding program, have made their home on one of the lake’s islands, marking a milestone success for the Irish reintroduction initiative that began in the summer of 2007.
