Carrick Castle

Carrick Castle is located on a small island in the River Suir in Ireland and is one of the country's largest castles. Built in 1142 by Conor O'Brien, it now stands in the town of Carrick in County South Tipperary. Well-preserved, it offers multilingual audiovisual guides.

Built in the 13th century atop an earlier stone fortress known as Carrick, the castle derives its name from the site. Its construction took place in two phases, with the part now facing the street being built 200 years before the other. In the late 14th century, the castle was granted to the powerful Butler family, and between the 15th and 17th centuries, it underwent expansions and renovations. Unfortunately, the castle fell into ruin in the late 18th century and was only partially rebuilt in the 1840s. Today, it retains an impressive keep, towers, and original defensive structures, making it one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles.

Nowadays, Carrick Castle is listed as a heritage site in Ireland and attracts large numbers of visitors every year. In 1981, it served as the filming location for key battle scenes in the famous movie "Excalibur."
