In the history of world literature, Irish writer James Joyce was undoubtedly a brilliant light. Although Joyce spent most of his later life abroad, in the 22 years from his birth in 1882 until he left his hometown, his family moved as many as 17 times in Dublin alone. Nowadays, when people visit Joyce’s former residence, the most common destination is the James Joyce Centre at 35 North Great George's Street, as its appearance remains the most faithful to the "original."

This three-story building features a porch in the Georgian style. For literature enthusiasts, the exhibits on the second and third floors are the most captivating. The book display room on the second floor is one of the best places in the world for Joyce studies, housing a wide collection of materials about Joyce in many languages. The renowned Joyce scholar Richard Ellmann once said, “Chaos was a hallmark of the Joyce household.”

As the eldest of nine siblings, Joyce’s living environment is reflected in the arrangement of the third-floor sitting room. One central room displays a bed that Joyce once slept in, with clothes scattered messily beside it. Nearby stands a faded yellow sofa, next to a round table, with a warm spotlight illuminating a used ashtray that belonged to Joyce. The chip in the ashtray resembles the wounded heart Joyce once endured, while a glass-framed photo display on the wall showcases images of over ten other former Joyce residences.
