Drogheda

Drogheda is located on the east coast of Ireland and is an industrial and port city in County Louth. It is the last town through which the River Boyne flows before reaching the Irish Sea. Though relatively young, Drogheda boasts a long history, and its diverse historical layers have created the city’s legendary charm.

There are numerous attractions in and around Drogheda, many of which are historical treasures and shining legacies of the city, well worth visiting. The Magdalene Tower, built in 1224, stands as a witness to and symbol of history, quietly telling the ancient stories of the town. St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church is world-renowned; it opened in 1884 and is famous for its shrine to Saint Oliver Plunkett. Old Mellifont Abbey, established in 1142, was Ireland’s first Cistercian monastery, introducing the monastic lifestyle of European monks to Ireland. Its most unusual feature is the octagonal lavabo.

Drogheda also features several remarkable mansions and gardens. Beaulieu House, situated in the eastern part of the city on the north bank of the River Boyne, boasts exquisite exteriors and interior walls adorned with family portraits. It also houses a fine collection of artworks by 20th-century Irish artists. The birthplace of Ireland’s greatest poet, Francis Ledwidge, now serves as a museum, preserving manuscripts of his poems, letters, war medals, and more.
