Carlow

Carlow is located in the southeastern part of Ireland, on the eastern bank of the River Barrow, about 72 kilometers from the capital city of Dublin. The River Barrow meanders through the city and serves as the county town of County Carlow. Historically an important city in Ireland, it was the country’s capital in the 14th century and is now considered the cleanest city in Ireland.

The most well-known landmark in Carlow is Brownshill Dolmen, located in the eastern part of the city. It is a megalithic portal tomb made of massive stone slabs, weighing approximately 100 metric tons, and is the heaviest burial monument in Europe. It has been designated as a national monument. Carlow Castle, situated on the banks of the River Barrow, was built between 1207 and 1213. Today, only the western wall and two towers remain, and it is also listed as a national monument. The Carlow County Military Museum, established in 1995, is a museum dedicated to the history of the Irish Defence Forces. It houses and displays uniforms of the Irish Defence Forces and also covers the wars that have taken place throughout Irish history. Other notable attractions include the Carlow County Museum, Carlow Microbrewery, Carlow Town Hall, and Carlow Courthouse.
