Nevsky Monastery

Introduction This monastery was also founded by Peter the Great. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, completed in 1790, is the center of the entire monastery.

　 The monastery’s famous attractions also include the celebrity cemetery on both sides of the gate. On the left side of the gate is the 18th-century celebrity cemetery, where many notable figures in Russian culture, such as Lomonosov, Vonwi (a writer), Rossi (an architect), and others, are buried. On the right side of the gate is the 19th–20th century celebrity cemetery, where composers such as Dostoevsky, Balakirev, Glinka, and other cultural figures are interred. The tomb of the great Russian commander Suvorov is located in the Church of the Annunciation, which is within the monastery grounds.

　 The tombstones in the monastery’s celebrity cemetery were all carved by renowned Russian sculptors, each being an exquisite work of art. As a result, the monastery is world-renowned for its artistic tombstones.
