Admiralty Building

Introduction The Admiralty was founded in 1704. Between 1806 and 1819, it was designed and constructed by architect Zakharov.

The façade of the tower spans over 400 meters in width. The base of the tower features an arched gateway with six passages, designed to resemble a triumphal arch. The gate is adorned with various statues and reliefs themed around the sea and the Russian Navy. On either side of the main gate stand two grand statue groups known as the Sea Gods, sculpted based on designs by Cherepanov and Shchedrin. With its rigorous and concise architectural style and its distinctly themed, majestic statues, the entire Admiralty building symbolizes the heroic spirit of Russian sailors.

The most eye-catching feature of the building is a gleaming, gilded spire that stands 72 meters tall. It is mounted on the roof of the central stepped tower. The spire pierces the sky and can be seen from anywhere in St. Petersburg.

The entire structure combines elements of classical and Russian architectural art. It is decorated with 56 large statues, 11 massive reliefs, and 350 murals. It was once the headquarters of the Admiralty and now houses a naval school. A statue of Peter the Great personally building a ship stands on the dock.
