Field of Mars

Introduction The Field of Mars is one of the oldest and most beautiful squares in St. Petersburg. Its scale was formed gradually, with the peak of construction taking place in the 1820s. Prior to that, it was known as a playground and later used as royal meadows. Recreational events and fireworks displays were often held here. Since the 19th century, it has served as a site for military parades and drills, which is why it came to be called the Field of Mars.

A famous statue of Russia’s renowned commander Suvorov stands on the square. On one side of the square is the Pavlovsk Barracks, whose massive buildings span several hundred meters and present an imposing sight. At the center of the square is a monument to revolutionary heroes. Radiating out from the monument in different directions are several tree-lined avenues, with lawns dotted with shrubs between them. The entire square is embraced by wooded groves and green lawns.
