Statue of Emperor Nicholas I

Introduction Emperor Nicholas I reigned from 1825 to 1855. In 1825, liberal-minded noble officers launched the Decembrist uprising, which Nicholas suppressed harshly. Thereafter, he intensified the crackdown on liberal ideas and revolutionary movements, establishing the secret police known as the Third Section. He also suppressed the Polish uprising of 1830.

Although Nicholas recognized the need to reform the backward serfdom system, he limited reforms to areas that did not conflict with the interests of the nobility. He implemented currency reform, legal code compilation, and reforms in the management of state-owned serfs. In foreign policy, he continued to uphold the principles of the Holy Alliance, cooperating with Metternich to suppress liberal and nationalist movements in Europe. In 1849, he suppressed the Hungarian national movement. He engaged in the Crimean War with Britain, France, and Turkey in an attempt to expand Russian dominance in the Black Sea and the Caucasus. He died suddenly when victory seemed near. There is also a legend that he committed suicide by poisoning.

The design of this statue is also very ingenious: the horse stands solely on its hind legs, bearing the full weight of the sculpture, which makes the design more challenging than the typical three- or two-legged poses with the tail supporting part of the weight.
