Russian State Library

The Russian State Library is located on Nevsky Prospekt in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Between 1932 and 1992 (during the Soviet era), it was known as the State Public Saltykov-Shchedrin Library, and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was renamed the Russian State Library in March 1992. It is the oldest public library in the Russian Empire, and it is worth mentioning that it is distinct from the Russian National Library located in Moscow.

As one of the two national libraries in Russia, the Russian State Library, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture and funded by the government, is responsible for preserving all printed materials, manuscripts, and other documents such as scientific proceedings in Russia, ensuring public access to cultural and scientific heritage and free use of information. The Russian State Library has the right to receive one copy of every printed item published in the Russian Federation, and it also acquires a wide variety of materials from abroad. Through donations and gifts, its collection continues to grow. The library serves as a center for research in library science, bibliography, and book studies in Russia.
