The State Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic

The State Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic is located in St. Petersburg. Established in 1930 and opened to the public in 1937, it is Russia’s only and the world’s largest museum dedicated to polar exploration, making it highly popular among polar enthusiasts and adventurers.

The museum houses a collection of up to 75,000 items, with exhibitions divided into three sections: the Arctic Natural Environment, the History of Research and Development of the Northern Sea Route, and Antarctica. The Arctic Natural Environment section introduces the harsh conditions of the Arctic region and the people who live there. The Northern Sea Route section tells the legendary stories of explorers and the history of polar navigation. The Antarctica section features playful and adorable penguins, as well as ice cores brought back from Antarctic domes that reveal the history of our planet. Visitors can also view aircraft used in polar expeditions, an Inuit girl figurine, a snow “tank” used to advance into the polar regions, statues commemorating those who contributed to the development of the Arctic and Antarctic, skis, cold-weather clothing, icebreakers, and more. Additionally, there are numerous specimens and photos of polar animals on display, such as white doves, polar bears, penguins, and falcons.

The State Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic is open from 10:00 to 18:00 Wednesday through Saturday, and from 10:00 to 17:00 on Sundays. It is closed every Monday and Tuesday, as well as on the last Friday of each month.
