St. Isaac's Cathedral

St. Isaac's Cathedral is located on the square of the same name in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is a neoclassical building commissioned by Tsar Alexander I. The construction project lasted 40 years, from 1818 to 1858. During the Soviet era, the building was first abandoned, then turned into an atheism museum. During World War II, the dome was painted gray to avoid attracting enemy aircraft. After the war, church services resumed, but only the left-side chapel is used on regular days, with the main cathedral used only on holidays.

Named after St. Isaac of Dalmatia, the patron saint of Peter the Great (whose feast day coincides with Peter the Great's birthday), St. Isaac's Cathedral is a grand and magnificent structure. Not only is it the largest church in St. Petersburg, it was also the largest cathedral in Russia at the time of its construction. To this day, it continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
